- Having a healthy mouth and a healthy body requires good oral health and good blood sugar management. This is because one of the known links to periodontal disease is the control of diabetes, and one of the factors that makes diabetes worse, is the presence of gum disease.
- Diabetes affects approximately 21 million Americans. Complications from diabetes can damage your eyes, nerves, kidneys, teeth and gums, as well as your heart and general circulatory system. When not properly managed, diabetes threatens oral health by causing gum disease. Joining the other complications of poorly controlled diabetes, periodontal (gum) disease is known as the “oral complication” of diabetes.
- Gum disease can make it more difficult to have good blood sugar control and diabetes can lower your resistance to infection and slow down the healing process.
- The most common oral health problems associated with diabetes include:
- Gum disease
- Tooth decay
- Saliva gland dysfunction
- Taste impairment
- Inflammatory oral-skin diseases
People with diabetes must have good daily oral/dental hygiene and have very regular dental checkups with their dentists and hygienist.
